Ms. Holloway and her colleagues are offering many clients rapid, long-lasting relief for a variety of pain issues with a high-tech neurology biofeedback device called BEST, an acronym for Biofeedback Electro-Stimulation Technology, at her Cary, NC office.
Eclectic is a useful word to describe every day healing events in the Alternative Health Center of Cary, founded in 1992, by Darlene Holloway, who holds a variety of credentials and certifications.
She and her colleagues share a remarkable range of expertise in a variety of detoxification programs, as well as effective weight loss, biofeedback, ear candling, structural integration, reflexology, a variety of massage specialties, and naturopathy.
BEST – A Path to Pain Relief
While she has spent decades of her life helping clients overcome health obstacles, Ms. Holloway herself has not been immune to serious health challenges. A failed hip replacement procedure hobbled her for months. Less than a year ago, she went off to a health conference in Chicago, spending a good deal of her time in a wheelchair.
“I was actually experiencing a high level of pain in the groin area at that time; it felt as if a tendon was contracting,” she reports. “It seemed certain that the pain was related to the hip condition, and physical therapy and massage were providing little relief.
“Then a friend at this conference introduced me to the BEST device which, quite frankly, I thought was just another gimmick. But she worked on the site of my pain for about 20 minutes, and the pain resolved completely—and it has never returned.
“I got intensely interested in researching this product, and have now introduced it into this practice where we are achieving this same kind of exceptional results quite consistently.”
The BEST device, made by a company called Avazzia, produces micro-current electrical impulses, Ms. Holloway explains. “These impulses are transmitted by electrodes in the device through the skin to interface with the body’s internal peripheral nervous system, in a therapeutic way. The device is controlled by a high performance microcomputer chip, which includes proprietary software.
“It’s really a marvel of digital technology,” Ms. Holloway explains. “There are a number of settings on the device—for example, a setting to treat migraine headaches—and a feedback loop built into the device. The technology is able to detect, measure, analyze, and respond to changes in the treatment area. With each response, the electrical properties of the tissue change. The device detects this change and responds, resulting in modification of the very next signal—made possible because of modern high-speed microprocessors. Would you believe this device measures these changes at the rate of 24 million times per second!”
Ms. Holloway and her colleagues limit the BEST sessions to 30 minutes, four times a week. “Ideally, we’re looking for complete resolution of the pain issue in a fairly short period of time, and of course each patient and each condition is unique. The device is invaluable in precisely locating the site of pain. One client recently came in complaining of pain on the left side of his lower back. The BEST device found the tissue at that site basically normal. But it found an intense level of pain on the right side of this patient’s back—who in fact was experiencing referred pain on the left side. The issue got resolved pretty quickly.
“We’re especially achieving excellent results with athletes who have a variety of aches and pains—particularly long distance runners. And this is a portable device. I take it home with me every night. Because of my hip issues, I don’t like to be too far away from this BEST device. It’s well-named.”
