The body, simply standing in place, can be immensely revealing if you know what to look for, says Darlene Holloway, of the Alternative Health Center of Cary and acknowledged as a national leader in the field of colon hydrotherapy.
Her many honors include selection as Colon Therapist of the Year by the International Association of Colon Therapists. She now serves as an at-large member of the organization’s governing board. .
And while she has great expertise in understanding and promoting colon health, she has even greater interest in the connections between mind, body, and spirit that form a life-giving health equation for each individual.
Full Range of Healing Methodologies
That is why, in addition to colon hydrotherapy, Dr. Holloway and her colleagues offer an array of healing practices, including structural integration, ion cleanse detoxification, reflexology, and a number of massage therapies.
“There are many instances when a client is scheduled for colon hydrotherapy and for good reason we may elect to go down a different path,” she says. “After all, a colonic is simply an elimination process, and there are many issues that affect and relate to colon health and that process.
“I may, for example, observe a client with a tilted pelvis, which is clearly going to interfere with elimination. I might advise that we switch the scheduled colonic and instead do a structural integration session specifically focused on unlocking the pelvis. Accomplishing that goal will greatly enhance the hydrotherapy session. If the pelvis is locked, the colon in turn will be locked—and what we are looking for is release and complete elimination.
“After years of observation, I get a lot of information with a visual body scan, simply seeing how someone is standing—if their feet are rotated in or out. When I’m working with someone who complains of neck problems, I don’t look at the neck. I look at the foundation—the placement and function of the feet. If we are not well connected to Mother Earth, then we are out of balance throughout our entire bodies. Structural integration is a wonderful therapy to address that imbalance.
“Reflexology is another powerful tool in the search for balance and elimination. Points on the feet relate to organs in the body. I often use reflexology during a hydrotherapy session if we are not getting good release or outflow of waste matter. There are also pressure points on the leg that correspond to the colon. And ion cleanse detoxification is often an important therapy for many patients who are victims of living in a highly toxic world.
“In common terms, the colon is like a sewer system in a house. If it’s not clean, it will back up and create a toxic mess, and affect all the organs in the body, including the largest organ of all: the skin. Skin eruptions are one way the body seeks to remove toxins.”
Colon hydrotherapy “is simply the safe, gentle infusion of warm filtered water into the rectum using no chemicals or drugs. It is a restorative procedure which is both relaxing and effective—an extended and more complete form of an enema. Colon hydrotherapy extends beyond the rectum to cleanse the entire large intestine.
“Good health is as much a function of our elimination status as the quality of food we ingest,” Ms. Holloway points out. “Every year, over 100,000 Americans are diagnosed with colorectal cancer—and nearly half will die from the disease.
“Periodic cleansing of the colon could prevent stagnation and minimize the exposure of potential cancer-causing agents to the colon wall. Colon hydrotherapy has a dissolving and therapeutic effect on the large intestine, resulting in a cleaner, healthier colon and improved overall health status.”
