Constipation is a Symptom of a Health Problem

Millions Spend Millions on Laxatives

“Remember,” says Darlene Holloway in her passionate, professional voice, “constipation is a symptom of a health problem which is simply signaling the fact that there is an issue that needs to be addressed. Our job as colon hydrotherapists is to identify the cause of the symptom and offer effective relief.”

Constipation, she notes, is widespread. Laxatives are a multi-million dollar business and, experts say, as many as four million people in the U.S. have a significant problem with constipation on any given day.

Rejuvenation Requires a Healthy Colon

It’s a well-established truth that regeneration and rejuvenation of the physical body is impossible without a properly functioning colon,” says Darlene Holloway, an expert in the field of colon irrigation therapy who founded the Alternative Health Center of Cary in 1992. Ms. Holloway is a graduate of the Florida Institute of Natural Health and the Florida School of Massage, and holds the highest level of certification as an instructor with the International Association of Colon Hydrotherapy. The I-ACT tapped her as International Colon Therapist of the Year in 2009.

Colon Hydrotherapy

The colon is a muscular tube that is usually about five to six feet long. It is best known, in terms of public awareness, as the site of colon cancers, which claim from 50,000 to 60,000 lives a year. “Our purpose with colon hydrotherapy,” says Ms. Holloway, “in terms of physical goals, is to hydrate the system, remove waste, stimulate peristalsis—muscle movement— rehabilitate the nerves, muscles, glands, circulatory and immune systems that form the components of the digestive system, and to reposition the intestines.

Viewing Supplements During Colonic Hydrotherapy

While we do not diagnose illness in this Center, I certainly do observe tell-tale signs about the condition of the body,” says Darlene Holloway, who has headed the Alternative Health Center of Cary since it was established n 1992.

She is a graduate of the Florida Institute of Natural Health and the Florida School of Massage, and holds the highest level of certification as an instructor with the International Association of Colon Hydrotherapy. The IACT tapped her as International Colon Therapist of the Year in 2009.

“This is a highly visual specialty,” she says. “For example, if I see bright red blood in the fluid during a colonic hydrotherapy session, it most commonly indicates a hemorrhoidal condition, which I will call to the client’s attention. If there is blood of a darker color, it may indicate a more serious problem and I will advise the patient to be checked by a gastroenterologist.

Colon Hydrotherapy Myths and Misconceptions

Darlene Holloway, understandably proud of her designation as International Colon Therapist of the Year by the International Association of Colon Hydrotherapy, agrees there are many misconceptions about efforts to keep colons as clean and well-functioning as possible.

“Perhaps the most common misconception is that there is a lot of discomfort with the colon hydrotherapy,” she says. “There simply should not be any discomfort with a colonic. The colon is four layers of muscles. And just like any muscle, it functions by contracting and relaxing. That’s the normal process. If a client has a lazy colon, they may feel some sensation as the muscleis asked to do unfamiliar work.

A Colonic Can Ease Discomfort

The lower abdomen is a busy place, home to a host of critically important organ systems: kidneys, gallbladder, the liver, the spleen, pancreas, uterus, ovaries, plus five to six feet of colon and the small intestines.

“When there is pain in the lower abdomen, many practitioners recommend a colonic for their patients, as a way to reduce pressure on organ systems,” says Darlene Holloway, founder and principal at the Alternative Health Center of Cary. “A colonic may not cure the problem, but it very often provides a high measure of relief.

“With IBS—irritable bowel syndrome—for example, often a good deal of the discomfort comes from bloating, gas, and intermittent constipation and diarrhea—and with IBS, the pain issue is more often gas-related.
