It’s a well-established truth that regeneration and rejuvenation of the physical body is impossible without a properly functioning colon,” says Darlene Holloway, an expert in the field of colon irrigation therapy who founded the Alternative Health Center of Cary in 1992. Ms. Holloway is a graduate of the Florida Institute of Natural Health and the Florida School of Massage, and holds the highest level of certification as an instructor with the International Association of Colon Hydrotherapy. The I-ACT tapped her as International Colon Therapist of the Year in 2009.
The colon is a muscular tube that is usually about five to six feet long. It is best known, in terms of public awareness, as the site of colon cancers, which claim from 50,000 to 60,000 lives a year. “Our purpose with colon hydrotherapy,” says Ms. Holloway, “in terms of physical goals, is to hydrate the system, remove waste, stimulate peristalsis—muscle movement— rehabilitate the nerves, muscles, glands, circulatory and immune systems that form the components of the digestive system, and to reposition the intestines.
“I never suggest to my clients that colon hydrotherapy helps cure colon cancer,” she says, “but it clearly offers significant preventive benefits for many health problems including cancer.
“Everything we put in our mouth touches and effects the walls of the stomach, small intestine, and colon—the large intestine. When these substances or their by-products are toxic—increasingly common in our toxic world—they damage the intestinal wall and cells, intoxicate the nerves and glands, and can be absorbed through the walls into the blood and lymph and ultimately to the cells and tissue.”
Many people seek out colon hydrotherapy for relief of a variety of ills, from headaches to arthritis, lupus to chronic fatigue. And, points out Ms. Holloway, “there is a strong emotional-spiritual component to this work, as well. For many, a colonic is an opportunity to ‘let go,’ and they have a sense of release that is both physical and emotional.”
Colon hydrotherapy, Ms. Holloway explains, is the safe, gentle infusion of warm, filtered water into the rectum using no chemicals or drugs. “This is a restorative, painless procedure which is both relaxing and effective,” she says. The client lies comfortably on a custom treatment table and the therapist gently inserts a small speculum into the rectum. The therapist then monitors the temperature and pressure of the water infused into and out of the colon—the large intestine—without any assistance on the part of the individual.
“The colon hydrotherapy method cleanses the entire colon without stressing the individual,” she says. “This method provides a closed system in which waste material is eliminated through the instrument and out of the drain line.”
Removing Impacted Waste
Some people are carrying 10 or more pounds of impacted waste in the lining of their colon, she notes, and it may require a series of colonics to remove this waste. “Colonics help flush out impacted matter that may have accumulated over 10 or 20 years, so we can’t expect to remove all of this waste material in a single session. I’ve had clients tell me that they have lost weight after a colonic, and I explain it is the process of eliminating waste from the colon. It’s not weight loss from dieting, but from cleansing out the colon.”
It’s also well-established, she points out, that unhealthy conditions in the colon are linked to many problems associated with degenerative diseases, impaired functioning of the nervous system and brain, premature aging, spasm, and irregularity.
After cleansing, regeneration and rejuvenation of the colon, Ms. Holloway works with her clients to maintain colon health. “Often I suggest daily use of a magnesium product, which comes in powder form and is mixed in water. Magnesium is a mineral that should be found naturally in food, but it is increasingly difficult to find healthy food that contains needed vitamins and minerals. We adjust the use of magnesium to the client’s condition. In an acute case—a client who hasn’t moved his or her bowels naturally for several months, for example—we will use a therapeutic dose. The goal is to get to a maintenance level, where the client has good function on a daily basis.
“In sum, we care a great deal about promoting good digestion, adequate and appropriate intestinal flora, and proper elimination as the underpinnings of good health.”
