For good reasons, Dr. Darlene Holloway, a naturopath and founder of the Alternative Health Center of Cary, at times refers to her practice as “the detoxification center of the Triangle.”
Her selection, in 2009, as Colon Therapist of the Year by the International Association for Colon Hydrotherapy was professional recognition that she is, indeed, a master of the art and science of detoxification of the human body.
“We’re all becoming aware of the fact that we live in a highly toxic world, and thus colon hydrotherapy and other detoxification procedures are gaining attention as critical restorative therapies,” she notes.
“In this practice, when we’re detoxing the body we consider a number of elimination paths, including the colon, the gallbladder, the liver, lungs, kidneys, the skin, and bladder. The colon is always of critical importance. It needs to be functioning properly or all other detox procedures will be much less effective. And reabsorption of toxic substances that fail to clear the colon are more difficult and challenging than initial detox procedures.
Detox Through the Skin
“Using the skin as an instrument of detoxification is critically important,” notes Dr. Holloway. “It is the body’s largest and heaviest organ, with multiple functions: protection, heat regulation, excretion, secretion, absorption, and sensation. It is also a key part of the body’s toxic elimination system, and it needs to be unblocked.”
To support that process, Dr. Holloway has recently introduced the organic Essensa products to her practice, and has added a licensed esthetician to her staff to help administer them.
“Many internal and external factors can affect the health of our skin,” notes Dr. Holloway, “including poor nutrition, medications, medical conditions, stress, free radicals, lack of sleep, and lack of exercise. Environmental exposure, air quality, pollutants, humidity as well as misuse of skin care products or poor maintenance also contribute to unhealthy looking skin.”
Her new Essensa products and procedures, she says, “include optimal nourishment for the skin, inside and out. The products are the purest, highest concentration of organic, naturopathic and aromatherapy blends on the market today, free of synthetic aroma chemicals, artificial color agents, artificial preservatives, and perfumes.”
The products have a special detoxification function when used as a body wrap, notes Dr. Holloway. “This body wrap is equivalent to a 20-minute cardiovascular workout. A spa blend is added to a creamy body mask for a cryothermic effect on the body, encouraging the body to metabolize and burn calories. It leaves the skin toned, legs feeling light and refreshed, while it enhances circulation, improves skin tone, and actively removes toxic substances through the skin.”
Notes Dr. Holloway, “It’s quite common, for example, for a client to come to us seeking relief from constipation. Their mindset is on that issue, and my mindset is on looking at the body as a whole, seeking to bring it into balance so the body does the work and that means eliminating toxins from every organ and every system in the body.
“We want to work with people to detox the body in a way that is supportive of their whole body healing. It’s ideal when a client comes to us who first does an Ion cleanse, drawing toxins out of all the organs in the body, and follows this with lymphatic massage and use of the Chi machine. We might move on, depending on needs, to a detox body wrap, followed by colon hydrotherapy. And there are other therapy-detox options, depending on the needs of the patient we are working with.”
