Colon Hydrotherapy Myths and Misconceptions

Darlene Holloway, understandably proud of her designation as International Colon Therapist of the Year by the International Association of Colon Hydrotherapy, agrees there are many misconceptions about efforts to keep colons as clean and well-functioning as possible.

“Perhaps the most common misconception is that there is a lot of discomfort with the colon hydrotherapy,” she says. “There simply should not be any discomfort with a colonic. The colon is four layers of muscles. And just like any muscle, it functions by contracting and relaxing. That’s the normal process. If a client has a lazy colon, they may feel some sensation as the muscleis asked to do unfamiliar work.

“We introduce filtered water into the colon, it hits reflex points, and the colon contracts and pushes the water out. The colon is doing the work, not the equipment. It’s not unlike the person who goes for a run, which they haven’t done in years, and they experience some discomfort in muscles they hardly ever use.”

The purpose with colon hydrotherapy, she says, is to hydrate the system, remove waste, stimulate peristalsis—muscle movement— rehabilitate the nerves, muscles, glands, circulatory and immune systems that form the components of the digestive system, and to reposition the intestines.

“A colonic is beneficial for a lot of reasons. Everything we put in our mouth touches and affects the walls of the stomach, small intestine, and colon. When these substances or their by-products are toxic—which is increasingly hard to avoid—they damage the intestinal wall and cells, intoxicate the nerves and glands, and can be absorbed through the walls into the blood and lymph and ultimately to tissue.

“When the colon is congested with stagnant wastes, toxins can back up into the system and pollute the inner environment. These poisons can re-enter and circulate in the bloodstream making us feel ill, tired, or weak. Impacted materials impair the colon’s ability to assimilate minerals and vitamins. And a buildup of material on the colon wall can inhibit muscular action causing sluggish bowel movements and constipation.”

During a colonic, she explains, “toxic material is broken down and flushed away so it can no longer harm the body or inhibit assimilation and elimination. Through massage, the skilled colon therapist is able to work loose and eliminate toxic waste. When the colon is cleansed and healed, the wellness of the whole body is greatly enhanced.”

Does a colonic upset the friendly flora in the colon?

There’s solid scientific research that concludes that it takes three colonics in a row—one every day—before there is an adverse impact on the friendly flora in the colon. We’re simply using water that is filtered in three different ways: carbon, ultraviolet, and ceramic. Drinking a cup of coffee, drinking black tea, or eating something that’s processed with food dyes will upset friendly flora more quickly than a colonic.

Is it possible to perforate the bowel with a colonic?

It’s more likely for this to happen with an enema at home. Colon hydrotherapy is much safer than an enema at home because we control pressure—the amount of water flowing into the colon— and temperature. We start with an eighth of a pound of pressure, and in my practice, we never go over a pound of pressure. At home, people may use an enema bag hanging from the shower curtain. Typically, that produces six to eight pounds of pressure. Our equipment is so sensitive that on inflow, if a client simply needs to cough, the pressure control will rise.

Finally, can you contract a disease from colon hydrotherapy?

We are truly vigilant in protecting our clients from the possibility of contracting a contagious disease as the result of a colonic. With the advent of HIV, this was a major concern in our profession, which quickly led to the use of disposables. The intake water line and the waste line never interact. And we are rigorous in our sterilization procedures.
